My work is a reflection on the art of great painting as an emotionally seductive vehicle of representation - the warmth, the texture, the light and dark, the depth, the composition, the movement, and the subjects and symbols. My paintings are in essence paintings of paintings, or more exactly they are paintings of pictures I have taken of original paintings in many museums throughout the world. But unlike a photographer who corrects the image, mine are taken as snap shots, often on the sly as many European museums prohibit photography. As such these remnants of the past are appropriated as an historical theft, taken as they present themselves to the camera's objective with all their apparent defects, glare, blur and prospective distortion. I have tried to couple these mechanical elements with what I hope is great craft to touch the deeper psychological and emotional side of creative representation. |
